Making Hazing History with Mike & Hank: Part 1 Featured

Welcome to a new segment here at Greek University. We decided to call this “Making Hazing History with Mike & Hank”. Today we talk about the first hazing death in a fraternity, Mortimer Leggett, in 1873. Hank Nuwer has been described as one of the nation’s foremost authority on hazing. We thought it would be helpful for our audience to learn more about the history of hazing in a video and audio format, so we’re excited to launch this new resource for you. Ray has a Doctorate in Education from Ball State University, and before joining the Franklin College faculty, Ray was Vice President of a public relations agency serving nonprofit and business clients. Ray wrote a chapter called “Public Relations for Fraternities in Crisis” in Hank Nuwer’s book, so Hank and I decided we would interview him together on this important topic. Ray tells us about his undergraduate experience at Indiana University, how college students can put their best foot forward with stakeholders, what training and background a PR chair should have, how much of a budget should be dedicated to PR in student organizations, what metrics students can use to see if their efforts are working, what is crisis management, how to use a crisis communications plan, whether national hazing campaigns and awards are helpful in reducing hazing, who should represent the organization in times of a crisis, why all the good stories about fraternities don’t always get published, and what message he wants to convey to those working to improve behaviors on college campuses. Ray loves good Italian food and Chicago hotdogs, so be sure to stick....
