Erica N. Music: How did you stay motivated to graduate from college as an adult learner?

Today we have with us Erica Music! Erica is a mother, educator, athlete, an active community volunteer, and the first in her family to earn a college degree. A native of Lexington, Kentucky, Erica earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Marketing Communication from Midway University in 2017. Erica’s career journey has included sales, higher education, and K-12 education. Erica’s educational journey has led her to develop a series of strategies for adult and working students by using her story to encourage, motivate, and rejuvenate adult learners who carry the many complex burdens and responsibilities of pursuing a degree. As a successful track athlete, Erica believes a person pursuing a degree should always remember, “if life presents a barrier, that hurdle is never bigger than the finish line.” There are many non-traditional students that enroll in college today.

In episode 235 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why Erica chose the University of Louisville, how she stayed motivated to graduate college as an adult learner, what scholarships are available to reduce the costs of higher education, how you can build confidence within adult learners, how you can get over the social anxiety of working with younger students in class, how you can adapt to the latest technology, the role that your family and friends will play in your college journey, what it was like being a cheerleader for the Tennessee Titans for four years, and what it’s like to be a registrar at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School working with high school students each day. Enjoy!
