Welcome to our next episode of Making Hazing History with Mike & Hank! Our co-host today is Hank Nuwer, the Author of Hazing: Destroying Young Lives, Wrongs of Passage, High School Hazing and The Hazing Reader. Today Hank and I talk about hazing in professional sports, including the NFL and MLB. We discuss incidents with Andre Royal with the New Orleans Saints, Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin with the Miami Dolphins, and Greg Jeffries with the New York Mets. There have also been players (such as Peyton Manning) and coaches (such as Andy Reid) that have worked to stop hazing incidents like this, while many sportswriters continue to dismiss these types of incidents as harmless. Where is the justice in some of these events that are borderline criminal, and what kind of a message are we sending to young fans that are looking to emulate their sports heroes? We interview Greg Vogt, one of the newest speakers at Greek University. He has already been speaking for Active Minds, and now he’s looking forward to sharing his story with your fraternity and sorority students as well. In his raw and transformational speeches, Greg unfolds his journey from living a typical childhood to battling depression, suicide attempts, and spending a year in a mental health treatment center. A story of personal recovery and healing, Greg faces unexpected external obstacles when he experiences the tragic loss of his favorite high school teacher by suicide, and then of one of his best college friends in a car accident. Greg graduated from The University of Arizona in 2017 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing and Entrepreneurship. During his time as a student, Greg spent nearly two and a half years writing and publishing a book. A self-help memoir, “The Battle Against Yourself,” was written with the mission to help students who are struggling to find hope, identity, and fulfillment. We talk about his time in a mental health treatment center, how he made the decision to attend the University of Arizona, why Kappa Alpha Order is so important to him, what he learned....

Dr. Jason L. Meriwether: Will we be successful in stopping hazing on college campuses? Featured

With us today is Dr. Jason L. Meriwether, an experienced higher education leader with over two decades of service to public and private universities, including nine years of HBCU service. We talk to Jason about why he decided to attend the University of Louisville, what was special about Fisk University, where he is seeing success at Humboldt State University, his new book: Dismantling Hazing in Greek Letter Organizations, whether we will be successful in stopping hazing, why students are still unaware of the risks of hazing, a discussion on some hazing cases including Knoll v. Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska (1999) and Kenner v. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity (2002), the Meriwether educative hazing prevention model, and how can we get students to get over this fear of getting in trouble and instead save a life.
