What sorority is Kamala Harris in?

Kamala Harris is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA) and joined the sorority at Howard University, an HBCU (Historically Black College or University). AKA is part of the country’s oldest and most prestigious sororoities and fraternities that are known as the “Divine Nine” historically black organizations with a network of more than 4 million alumni and a combined revenue of $150m according to the NY Times, all of which will be part of an effective mobilization effort ahead of the election for President of the United States in November of 2024.  There are a total of 360,000 women that belong to AKA, and the pride in belonging to the organization is not just something that was part of their undergraduate experience, but rather something they belong to for life.

As an example of the power of sorority and fraternity, AKA has already created a political action committee to help bolster the candidate’s chances of going to the White House. When Harris was first announced as Joe Biden’s running mate back in 2020, the campaign was flooded with donations in a very particular amount, $19.08, which is a reference to the year that AKA was founded (1908).

As Vice President, Harris hosted a visit of all the Divine Nine leaders at the White House back in 2021 and have visited with both Harris and Biden often since then. White the Divine Nine has not specifically endorsed a particular candidate, every Divine Nine president pledged in a statement to “meet this critical moment in history with an unprecedented voter registration, education and mobilization coordinated campaign.” Regardless of your political affiliation, the power of sorority and fraternity transcends well beyond college, and will be studied closely after the November 2024 United States Presidential election in terms of its impact.
