Whether you’re facing mental health struggles, emotional distress, alcohol or drug use concerns, or just need someone to talk to, caring counselors are here for you. Dial 988. On August 22, 2019, Susan Crooks faced an unimaginable loss when her son Walt succumbed to treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. In his memory, Susan and her other son, Will, established Walt’s Waltz—a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing suffering and stigma surrounding mental health struggles. Together, we can foster understanding and support for those in need. Their mission is to destigmatize mental health, promote equity in care and research funding, and empower individuals through education and advocacy to foster hope and reduce suffering.
In episode 527 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why Susan chose to attend the University of Central Florida as an adult learner, we learn more about Susan’s son Walt and the non-profit called Walt’s Waltz, how she finds the strength to help others after going through this, the myths about mental health, how college students can take their mental health temperature, how the arts can help with mental health, what is a mental health moonshot, and how we can create a stigma-free environment in college. Enjoy!
