PRESENTATION: Connections Beyond Borders – How to Talk to Anyone, Anywhere
College is one of the first times you’ll meet people from completely different backgrounds—whether it’s a roommate from another state, an international student in your class, or someone with totally different life experiences than you. For Greek organizations, knowing how to connect across differences isn’t just a social skill—it’s key to strong recruitment, leadership, and creating a more inclusive, respected chapter.
Jen Ruiz knows what it’s like to step outside her comfort zone. A former lawyer who left the courtroom to travel full-time, Jen has visited 50+ countries solo, navigating cultural differences in places like Kazakhstan, Slovakia, and Jordan. She’s learned how to make friends anywhere, have meaningful conversations despite language barriers, and break through awkwardness to build real connections. Now, she’s bringing those lessons back to help students do the same.
In this engaging session, Jen will share real stories from her travels and teach students how to confidently connect with people from different backgrounds—whether it’s during recruitment, networking events, or everyday campus life.
Key Takeaways:
1. From Fear to Curiosity – How to shift from feeling uncomfortable around differences to embracing new perspectives with confidence.
2. Finding Common Ground – Practical strategies to build instant connections, even when you don’t seem to have much in common.
3. Conversations That Matter – How to engage in respectful, meaningful discussions and avoid awkward or unintentionally offensive moments.
4. Becoming a Leader in Inclusion – How to make your organization known as a welcoming, socially aware group that values diversity.
By the end of this session, students will feel more confident in their ability to engage with new people, better equipped to create an inclusive, thriving chapter, and ready to see the world—not just through their own lens, but through the eyes of the incredible people they meet along the way.
