Phi Beta Sigma helping the homeless Featured

A couple of weeks ago I was speaking to a group of students at Ohio University, and I stressed the importance of giving back to the community. College students have a duty to help those that are less fortunate, and there are so many people within our communities that don’t know where their next meal is coming from, let alone plan a career. My commitment to community service came from my local chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity in Buffalo, New York over 20 years ago. That sense of purpose and giving back to the community will continue to stay with me for a lifetime. It’s something that we must build into all of our Greek leadership conferences, and it’s something that should be a part of every Fraternity or Sorority calendar. For those chapters that are struggling with brotherhood events but have social events planned out for every weekend of the semster, my suggestion is to cancel half of the social events and put more focus on community service. There are so many great organizations in your community that you can get involved with. Not only will you feel better as a person once you complete that community service event....

Delta Sigma Phi giving back to Big Brothers/Big Sisters

So, of course I loved the original Taylor Swift video that the Delta Sigma Phi chapter at Transylvania put together. It was fun, fresh, and I bet they had a blast making the video. Talk about a great brotherhood event! Not only that, the students used it as a way to raise money for leukemia. I’d be very proud to be in this chapter! If you didn’t see their “Shake It Off” video, you can check it out here: https://youtu.be/s2YHHIOocxs After Taylor Swift received all the attention from their viral video as a parody on her song, she tweeted back to the chapter (and their dates) that she had concert tickets waiting for them. According to a recent news post, the chapter then in turn donated all the tickets to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Bluegrass. Congrats Beta-Mu chapter. You guys hit a home run! It’s acts of kindness like this that we need to be doing more of. That’s living the values of Delta Sigma Phi, and perfectly communicating the values of the Fraternity to the community. Well done.
